A Lonely Cow - Rest in Peace

The population of Coney Island, Singapore, are greatly saddened following the reported death of 'The Cow' earlier this week.

Coney Island is an island located off the North-Eastern coast of Singapore, alternatively known as Pulau Serangoon. It is relatively small, consisting of only 133 hectares, equivalent to roughly 130 international rugby pitches. 'The Cow' was somewhat of a legend upon Coney Island, and was the only wild cow roaming free on the island.

How the cow got to the island is a mystery amongst the locals and authorities alike. The most common theory is that the cow 'wandered in' after dam crossings were built on the island, but no-one can be sure seeing as there have been no reports of a lost cow, making this cow's presence entirely mysterious.

Due to the island being opened as Singapore's newest national park last year, there has been a dramatic increase in tourism to the island, all hoping to see the treasured cow. This is partly due to the lack of livestock on the island or on mainland Singapore, meaning that the wild cow was made all the more valuable.

However, there was a sad incident that caused many Singaporeans to grieve on Wednesday this week, October 12th.

On Wednesday this week, the National Parks Board, (NParks,) announced that the Coney Island cow had sadly died after a routine health check up that takes place annually. It was said that the cow could not be revived after a "necessary" sedation. The statement by NParks states that "Given its large size, sedating the cow was a standard procedure to ensure the safety of all personnel involved."

However, this necessary sedation led to the cow not waking up. It is most likely that the cow died from "chronic underlying illnesses" and that it died of "heart and lung complications while sedated." This, however, is very little consolation for the locals. One described the cow as a "real gangster, roaming about the island without caring about anyone". Another said that they were "saddened" at the news, along with a seemingly radical suggestion to rename the island "Cowney Island" as a tribute to the dead, yet iconic animal.

The cow will be missed, and mourned by many.

Thank you very much for reading this somewhat lighter story of my recent posts. I tried to stay away from politics, natural disasters or technology for today and go for a slightly more obscure yet interesting story. I hope you enjoyed this regardless, and if you want more you can follow this blog or find me on Twitter @jman0605
